UK Centre for Carnival Arts, Luton

The brief asked for a building that reflects the spirit of carnival. For Ash Sakula, that meant capturing some of the energy and materiality of carnival.

The new carnival centre consists of two new buildings astride a courtyard with a continuous enclosing perimeter.  The larger building, the masquerade camp, houses performance spaces, a workshop, teaching spaces and a café.  The smaller facilitating building houses offices, the national carnival archive, studios and a crèche. The courtyard, with two large gates either end, is a both-and-all space, a spillover space for workshop and performance and a new street for carnival.
